Do you take a collagen supplement? I think you should.
I started taking one to help with knee pain a few years ago. Seems to help.
I started with this one.
And then…
I read it has some benefits in a study published with year. Here is a background story from UCLA.
Those long-chain fatty acids in collagen supplements are used by some people for:
- A source of protein for smoothies
- To help with smoothing out wrinkles
- Joint pain support
This 2023 study shows that the long-chain amino acids in collagen produce a response in growth of bone minerals in certain bones and an increase in bio-markers that indicates bone growth.
Collagen is a large part of our bodily protein that we lose as we age.
The way I understand it, our bones are always in a cycle of breaking down and getting re-built. As we age, the process slows down and is less efficient due to loss of collagen and other factors. Leaving us exposed to the possibility of osteopenia (the initial stage of bone loss) and leading to the more serious condition of osteoporosis. We may be losing too much bone, making too little bone, or both.
The National Institute for Health has a long list of peer-reviewed studies showing the benefits of collagen supplement for building bone strength, bone mass and bone density. Some of the studies show it can help relieve joint pain, and help with keeping soft tissues and tendons more well-hydrated and springy.
I have also seen collagen supplements used postmenopause as a way to soften lines and wrinkles in our face.
Collagen, you are really flexing hard right now. I’m impressed.
I found another brand of bio-active peptides meant to offer a formulation that supports skin bounciness and thought (*shrugs) why not try it? I like how the amount of product per serving is smaller and the overall cost is less.
I don’t know what Verisol is, or what it does (seems proprietary) but I do think the results are similar to Vital Proteins.
The main point I want to emphasize is: hey! are you postmenopausal? Take a daily hit of collagen with me and we will rule the world with stronger bones and bouncier tendons.
Taking a collagen supplement can be a component of your Post Menopause Tool Kit for Healthy Bones and Bouncier Skin and Tendons along with:
- Moving your body (I’m thinking about using a weighted jump rope for bone-building)
- Lifting weights and weight-bearing exercize
- Eating AT LEAST 20 grams of protein at each meal (this takes planning and the collagen helps!)
Let’s go big on building up the Postmenopause Tool Kit we need to help us age beautifully/strongly.
PS: Will you add collagen supplements to your daily diet?
PPS: I am cheering us all on as we go bravely and happily into our postmenopause era.
Thanks for reading.
